Uber Health has announced Uber Caregiver, a new solution designed specifically for caregivers and their loved ones. Beginning in the summer of 2024, care-receivers will have the ability to add a caregiver to their Uber app profile so that the caregiver can request and monitor rides and deliveries on behalf of the care-receiver. The service will be paid through the care-receiver’s eligible health benefits. The goal of this solution is to help health care consumers maximize their ancillary health care benefits, and to improve the care experience for both caregivers and care-receivers.
Uber Caregiver is designed to reduce logistical burdens of caregiving, and lessen the complications of navigating ancillary benefits. Care-receivers can enter their health benefits card information into their Uber and Uber Eats accounts. Once a caregiver is assigned for a care-receiver, that caregiver will have the ability to understand and act on benefit information on behalf of their loved one.
Initial benefits of Uber Caregiver will include requesting rides for the care recipient, select the recipient’s health benefits as the payment method, and track their ride on the Uber app. Later in 2024, caregivers will also be able to manage grocery and over-the-counter (OTC) item delivery with the same tracking features as rides. By being able to use the care receiver’s health benefits card as payment for these benefits, Uber Caregiver aims to ease this part of the financial strain that caregivers often face.
This is the beginning of Uber Health’s efforts to address caregivers’ pain points. In the coming months, the organization will begin working with Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and commercial plans to provide enhanced support to caregivers in the United States. Additional capabilities will roll out later in 2024.
Uber Health launched its HIPAA-enabled solution in 2018 to facilitate non-emergency medical transportation, or delivery of groceries and prescriptions. The solution is used by over 3,000 health care provider organizations to arrange transportation for consumers. Uber Health’s application programming interface (API) and dashboard can facilitate mobility solutions and critical deliveries, streamlining population health management, and supporting better consumer outcomes.
