South Carolina & Pear Therapeutics Launch Pilot To Test Digital Intervention With Inmates In Recovery From Addiction

|

By OPEN MINDS Circle

On September 1, 2022, the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) and Pear Therapeutics, Inc. announced a pilot program to offer Pear’s prescription digital therapeutics (PDT) to women inmates recovering from addiction disorders. Eligible inmates at the Camille Griffin Graham Correctional Institution (CGGCI) will be prescribed and treated with the Pear PDTs reSET or reSET-O, for addiction or for opioid addiction.

During the three-to-four month pilot, up to 100 SDC inmates will be able to receive treatment with reSET or reSET-O. They will access the PDT using an SCDC-issued tablet that provides access to other SCDC virtual programming. This project is funded by the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services. The state is using funds through its State Opioid Response 2.0 (SOR) Grant of $159,840 awarded by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

SCDC has not released details about it will evaluate the pilot program. The goal is to help CGGCI expand access to addiction services. CGGCI has about 654 inmates. The state estimates that 85% have addiction disorder.

The aim of each software application is as follows:

  • reSET is a software application that provides cognitive behavioral therapy as an adjunct to a contingency management system. It is intended increase the consumer’s abstinence level and increase retention in an outpatient treatment program. It is not intended for adults on opioid replacement therapy, or for those who use alcohol or opioids as their primary substance of abuse.
  • reSET-O is a software application that provides cognitive behavioral therapy as an adjunct to outpatient treatment for opioid addiction that includes transmucosal buprenorphine and contingency management. It is intended to increase treatment retention in outpatient addiction treatment.

Pear Therapeutics develops and markets PDTs for multiple therapeutic areas. Three of its PDTs have been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for commercial use; they are reSET® for addiction, reSET-O® for opioid addiction, and Somryst® for the treatment of chronic insomnia. The PDTs are designed to engage consumers in treatment and provide tracking tools for clinical professionals. Its PDTs are designed to collect real world data for use by prescribing clinical professionals and for population health management by payers and health systems. Pear started marketing reSET and reSET-O in January 2019. It launched Somryst for chronic insomnia on November 17, 2020.
