On October 26, 2022, Cigna introduced the Evernorth Vitality Index as a new way to evaluate population health, well-being, and workforce productivity as people and businesses recover from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) public health emergency. The Evernorth Vitality Index was developed in partnership with Dr. Richard Ryan, co-founder of the Subjective Vitality scale, a self-reported seven-point scale that measures the state of feeling alive and alert (having energy available to the self).
A person’s level of vitality is believed to be linked to personal growth and work productivity. In this model, higher levels of vitality are linked to better workforce engagement, retention, and productivity. Higher vitality also confers a wide range of benefits to the individual, such as better mental and physical health and higher levels of job satisfaction and performance. Alternatively, low vitality contributes to poor work quality, higher turnover, and workplace dissatisfaction.
In a baseline survey for the Evernorth Vitality Index, researchers for Evernorth found that less than 20% of the respondents had “high vitality.” The average vitality score among the general population is 67.4 out of 100 (maximum vitality). Vitality levels varied across age groups. Across the age groups surveyed, young adults ages 18 to 24 had the greatest prevalence of low vitality, affecting 25%. Among adults ages 25 to 64, 16% had low vitality, as did 10% of older adults ages 65 to 75.
Evernorth reported the baseline survey findings in “The State of Vitality in the United States.” The researchers conducted an online survey of more than 10,000 adults ages 18 to 75 across the United States from May 17 to June 19, 2022, using Morning Consult. The goal was to determine the general state of vitality in the United States. Neither Cigna nor Evernorth have released details about how they intend to incorporate the Evernorth Vitality Index into their product lines.
